F is for Flange

Flanges are located on the outside of the shell on the custom orthotic on the medial and/or lateral side of the device at the arch region. Clips are located on the outside of the shell in the heel area.Flanges

A Lateral Flange is a vertical extension of the lateral arch region in the shell that offers supinatory control, typically medium height or as designated.

A Medial Flange is a vertical extension of the medial arch region in the shell that offers pronatory control. It can be low, medium or high or to a designed height, if drawn on the cast or in the foam box. It cannot be seen on a scan, so you need to state the height that is needed.

SOLO Lab standards are measured from apex of arch:

  • Low 3/16″
  • Medium 5/16″-1/2″
  • High 1/2″-7/8″

A Lateral Clip is a vertical extension of the lateral side of the heel cup in the shell to offer better rear foot control.

Medial Arch Platform (MAP), or Shaffer medial, is a horizontal expansion of the shell in the medial arch region that supports a collapsed mid-foot. It is an alternative when the patient can not tolerate the control of the medial flange. A mini MAP is available for mild collapse or when the shoe room is limited.

A Soft Flange is made of soft material like Poron®. It’s manufactured to your specifications including the desired material, height and its thickness, and it can be held in place by the shoe itself or secured in the vertical position if desired.
