Do You Know The Meaning of SOLO?

In this installment of SOLO’s history, we ask SOLO founder, Barry Sokol to share how SOLO got its name.

Finding the right name for the business is important. Barry Sokol, SOLO’s principal founder, wanted a name that was more than just a word or words. He wanted it to represent his values and commitment to his customers.

In the early days of the business, Barry Sokol and fellow founding partner, Bruce Gernert, and Randy Schlenker were trying to find the right name for the company. “Bruce suggested Sokol Labs,” said Barry. Bruce even designed a logo and showed it to Barry. Having his name on the business wasn’t what Barry had in mind.

Barry had been thinking and praying about a name for this new venture. He wanted the name to convey the key values that he believed would make the company successful. Providing great service was important to Barry. At the time, it was the only custom orthotics lab in the area offering exemplary service and providing a reliable weekly pick-up and delivery service for custom orthotics.

Barry relied on his faith to guide him. He prayed about it and found inspiration from Matthew 23:12 “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Barry believed that putting the needs of others first would make his business successful. Being committed to providing high-quality, custom orthotics was Barry’s way of showing care, concern and love for SOLO’s customers and their patients. “We wanted to make the best product for our customers and patients,” added Barry. Combining a passion for outstanding service and a deep commitment to delivering a quality product, Barry thought of the phrase “Serve Others, Love Others,” and the name SOLO took shape. SOLO is an acronym and that’s why you always see it in capital letters rather than upper and lower case letters.

Today, 35 years later, SOLO is not just a tagline. It’s the guiding force in our business. You’ll see our name on our custom orthotics as a reminder that being of service to our customers continues to be an honor for us.
